Meet the Coaches

Our mission is to help to develop strong athletes and great individuals. It is our vision to be the premier Junior Development Program in New York State.

We will teach progressions for development of the fundamental skills of skiing and riding technique and tactics. Combining ideal terrain, progressive coaching methods and a well-rounded curriculum, the athletes will learn in a Fun and Positive Environment specific to their needs. Adopting an "athletes first, winning second" philosophy, along with a long-term athlete development approach, it is our goal that the athletes will enjoy the outdoors, develop friendships and see the world as a result of their hard work and dedication.

Athletes who are new to the Competition Team Program will undergo a two-week trial period, during which time the coaches will assess the individual's skill and interaction with the other athletes in the group. Recommended pre-requisites are as follows: past experience with another Racing Program or previous enrollment in Hunter Mountain's Junior Development Program.

We train for competitions. This means that athletes are encouraged to attend races throughout the season, appropriate to their age group and skill level. During times of competitions, their coaches may NOT be available for those who choose not to compete. These individuals will be provided with a substitute coach.

What happens if we are late for training?
We at Hunter Mountain understand -  the Ski & Snowboard School’s administrative assistant, at extension 2389, is in radio contact with every Head Coach. They can direct you to where your child can catch up with their group or find a Competition Team coach with a radio to assist you.

What do children do for lunch?
Hunter Mountain Coaches do not monitor your children during the lunch hour. We would advise parents to either pack a lunch for their child, or make necessary arrangements to pick your child up when lunch begins, check with their coach.

How do I know if the Competition Teams are right for my child?
A child who will be successful in this program can ski or ride the whole mountain, is independent, motivated, focused, committed to the sport, has advanced skiing or riding skills and wants to compete. Jim Catalano, our Racing Programs Director, is available to speak with any parent who would like more information. He can be reached at extension 2289, via email jcatalano@huntermtn.com or you can make an appointment with him 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Ski School Office. You can also contact Ski and Snowboard schools administrative assistant at extension 2389.

What are the prerequisites for enrolling my child in the Competition team program?
As mentioned above, your child needs to be a proficient skier or snowboarder. Children should also be old enough and self-sufficient enough to spend a day on the hill. Your child should have the stamina to ski or snowboard from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm, willingness to participate, ability to communicate clearly about basic needs (cold, hurt, hungry, thirsty, bathroom), ability to be away from Mom & Dad all day, and the ability to stay warm on cold days, etc. Of course, our coaches spend the day with the athletes, but the coaches are not babysitters.

Are competitions mandatory?
Competition is part of our programs. Athletes are encouraged, but not required to participate in competitions. If your child chooses not to participate in competitions, there may not be training available on those days.

Are all competitions attended by coaches?
Hunter Mountain coaches will attend all approved competitions with their athletes. All expenses for these competitions are included in our program fees.  Additional fees may be necessary if your athlete wishes to compete in events beyond our approved competition schedule. Competitions at or beyond the Junior Olympic or National Championship level are not included in our schedule. Parents of athletes who qualify for these events will be responsible for additional fees which include the following: transportation, lodging and meals for coaches divided evenly for athletes who attend these events.

What will my child do if they do not attend a competition?
We train for competitions. This means that athletes are encouraged to attend races throughout the season, appropriate to their age group and skill level. During times of competitions, their coaches may NOT be available for those who choose not to compete. If possible, these individuals will be provided with a substitute coach.

If my child is not ready for the Competition Teams, what other program is there?
The Junior Development Program may be right for your child.

I would like to contact the Coach who is instructing my child, how can I contact him or her?
Request a meeting verbally when you drop off your child in the morning. They are available to meet with you from 3:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on training days.
