Nastar Regional Pacesetter Trials

Fri, Jan 10

Time: 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM
Location: Lower Broadway Race Hill

NASTAR stands for the NATional STAndard Race and Pacesetting is the glue that holds the NASTAR program together. Each NASTAR resort or club must have certified Pacesetters set the Par Time, or the National Standard for each race. Once the Par Time is set, every racer earns a handicap based on their performance. The system allows NASTAR racers to compete on different mountains and compare their skills.

Ryan Cochran-Siegle (RCS) is the National Pacesetter and the zero handicap. NASTAR's Regional Pacesetters earn their pacesetting handicaps racing against Ryan so they can set the Par Time for Ryan at Regional Pacesetting Trials across the country. Resort and Club Pacesetters earn certified pacesetting handicaps at the trials and their handicap represents the difference between their time and Ryan's time expressed as a percentage (e.g. 15 handicap = 15% behind RCS's time).

The Pacesetting Trials are not open to the public.

Pacesetters looking to attend a Regional Pacesetting Trial must be registered with NASTAR and know their NASTAR Registration number. Pacesetters must verify that they are in the NASTAR Database by searching for their last name at and logging in to their NASTAR record. Pacesetters must have a password and they must update/edit their personal information. If a Pacesetter is not in the NASTAR Database, they must create a NASTAR record by Registering on the NASTAR web site.

Pacesetter Handicaps:

Pacesetters will earn three handicaps at the Pacesetting Trials. Pacesetters' handicaps will be recorded to the hundredth of a point. The lowest handicap earned during the first race will serve as the pacesetter’s “Coat” handicap. Pacesetters must wear their warm-ups or regular work clothes for the first race. When pacesetters set the Par Time at their resort wearing their warm-ups or regular work clothes, they must use their “Coat” handicap.

The second race provides pacesetter with an opportunity to earn a handicap wearing a race suit. The ""Suit"" handicap must be used when a pacesetter sets the par time wearing a race suit. The lowest handicap earned during the second race will determine each pacesetter’s “Suit” handicap. Pacesetters without a suit will continue to race to lower their coat handicap.

NASTAR Slalom handicaps are earned during the SL Pacesetting Race. SPM Hero gates or stubbies are used for NASTAR Slalom to encourage public participation, however, full gate NASTAR slalom races are also encouraged for advanced racers."
